RECYCLED SILVER

Ikonniko pieces are made from recycled silver.

Recycled sterling silver contains 92,5% of silver and 7,5% of copper. Fine or pure silver (99,9% silver) is relatively soft, so it’s usually combined with other metals to produce a more resistant alloy.

You will find that most of our pieces are entirely made from this eco-friendly material. However, there are some earpins, chains or scrolls which have a non-recycled origin. I am increasingly working with recycled silver and looking for new suppliers.

Where does this material come from? It is produced from recycled scrap silver, medical equipment, electronics, etc., with European origin. It is 100% guaranteed and certified, having the same quality as non-recycled silver, whilst being eco-friendly.

How to take care of this material?

  - Sterling silver oxidizes when it is exposed to air, but a regular cleaning of your jewellery pieces and the following tips will help prevent tarnish:

- Wearing your jewellery often helps to keep the silver shiny because of the natural oils in your skin.

  - When you are not wearing your jewels, store the silver pieces in airtight plastic bags as a preventative measure or in their jewellery boxes. Try to keep them in a cool and dry storage area.

  - Commercial silver polishes and dips are easy to find, they use a specific formula to remove tarnish. Microfiber, or other soft non-abrasive cloths will polish your silver as well.

  - Avoid contact with household chemicals or chlorinated water (if you like swimming, for example).

GOLD

I love the combination of gold and silver, but I have not found yet a supplier where I can buy fairtrade or fairmined gold. That’s the reason there are only a few pieces in my store that have some gold details, usually 9ct yellow gold.

Gold can be found in different carats purity. 9ct yellow gold is 37.5% pure gold mixed with 62.5% other alloys.

As you can find this material mixed with silver in our pieces, we recommend following similar tips to take care of this material.

GOLD PLATED

Gold plated silver pieces is an affordable way of wearing gold jewellery. Local artisans carry out this process, so once the piece is done in my studio, I take it to them for this final process.

It is difficult to give an exact prediction about the lifespan of this plated surface. It is going to depend on different factors and will require a proper care and maintenance to prolong its life:

  - Layer Thickness. Our rings are plated with 2-5 microns and in case of the earrings, with 1-3 microns, it is detailed in the item description.

  - Exposure of the plated jewellery. Your daily activities can gradually cause unnoticeable wear&tear. You can avoid more noticeable marks if you take your ring off when you need to work with a hard/ abrasive surface, perform rough activities, work with tools, or you’re simply going to spend the day doing housework, for example.

Also, avoid direct contact with chemicals or perfume.

  - Your own skin. This is the most unpredictable factor, your skin pH also affects the plating. Some skin simply responds better with the plating than others. In a very extreme case, the plating may last mere days.

Regular body grease is ok, but it is recommendable to take off your ring when you exercise.

  - Do not use traditional jewellery cleaners on your plated jewellery, for example a jewellery cloth, as they usually contain chemicals. Clean the gold plated piece with a soft cotton cloth and warm water. Use a miniscule amount of liquid soap if needed.

SEMI-PRECIOUS STONES

Gemstones are traditionally classified as precious and semi-precious stones. Semi-precious stones are all those gemstone outside diamonds, rubies, emeralds or sapphires. However, certain semi-precious stones can at times be more valuable than precious ones.

I am always looking for gemstones with original shapes and great colours. You can find some different gemstones in our necklaces: sodalite, howlite, serpentine, adventurine, etc.

To clean your gemstones do not soak them in water; wipe them with a soft cloth instead. Store them in a cool, dry place.

There are also pearls in some of our pieces. You can clean them using a soft cloth, if they are very dirty you can also use a damp cloth (with or without some diluted mild soap), but make sure they dry after cleaning them. Store them in a cloth pouch.

Protect your gemstones and pearls from exposure to chemicals, perfume or cosmetics.

PLATA RECICLADA
